New Delhi: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were released on Sunday after being placed under preventive arrest ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
According to CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh, the three leaders were produced before an executive magistrate and released on the condition that they would not breach the peace for one year.
Singh announced their release in a post on X, stating that the executive magistrate’s court had released Dipke, Das and Ranka.
Leaders Detained at Delhi Airport
Police had detained the CJP leaders after their flight landed in Delhi on Saturday. They were subsequently placed under preventive arrest and were scheduled to be produced before an executive magistrate at Delhi Cantt Police Station.
According to sources, Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were invoked. These provisions concern security for keeping the peace and arrest to prevent the commission of cognisable offences.
Security Tightened Across the Capital
The detentions took place amid extensive security arrangements in Delhi ahead of the planned demonstration. According to the report, more than 7,000 protesters were detained at multiple locations, preventing many from reaching Jantar Mantar.
Several opposition leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were also detained while attempting to join the protest.
The CJP renewed its call for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Sunday as police continued security preparations. More than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel were expected to be deployed across the city, according to the report.
Protest Over Voter Roll Revision
The CJP and opposition parties have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The proposed demonstration has drawn attention to the dispute over voter list revision and the authorities’ measures to maintain public order during the planned gathering.
