Hyderabad: Construction of steel flyovers and an underpass at IIIT Hyderabad Junction in Gachibowli has intensified traffic congestion across Cyberabad’s busy IT corridor, with commuters reporting delays and difficulties navigating road diversions.
Barricades installed around the construction sites have reduced the available road space on key routes connecting Hitec City, the Financial District, Lingampally and Kokapet. Commuters say the restrictions are contributing to congestion and making daily travel more time-consuming.
Commuters Raise Safety Concerns
Road users have expressed concern over the placement of iron and plastic barricades around the junction. According to commuters, the barriers occupy substantial portions of the motorable road, leaving less space for vehicles to move through the affected stretches.
They have also raised concerns about the visibility of barricades after dark, saying that reflective tape and blinking LED markers are needed to help motorists identify construction boundaries and navigate diversions safely.
Cyberabad Traffic Police have reportedly extended road closures and diversions for another 90 days, adding to concerns among regular commuters who use the junction to travel between residential neighbourhoods and major employment centres.
Calls for Phased Construction
Commuters have acknowledged the importance of the flyover and underpass projects but urged the authorities to reduce disruption during construction.
They have called on the municipal authorities, traffic police and contractors to limit the length of road sections closed at any one time and complete work in phases wherever feasible.
Aishwarya Menon, a fashion designer from Masjid Banda, said contractors should complete work on one stretch and clear it before closing another. Such an approach, she said, could help commuters save time and fuel.
Better Traffic Management Sought
The ongoing work at IIIT Hyderabad Junction has renewed calls for improved coordination between construction agencies and traffic authorities.
Commuters want clearly marked diversions, adequate lighting, reflective barricades and better traffic management, particularly during peak hours and after dark.
As construction continues, road users are seeking measures that allow the infrastructure projects to progress while minimising inconvenience and improving safety on surrounding roads.
