Hyderabad: Hospitals, private nursing homes and clinics across Hyderabad are reporting an increase in viral infections, particularly upper respiratory tract infections, with patients presenting with high fever, persistent cough and breathing-related complaints.
According to doctors, healthcare facilities have seen a higher influx of patients over the past week. Paediatric departments, including those at major facilities such as Niloufer Hospital, have also reported an increase in young patients seeking treatment for flu-like symptoms.
Medical professionals are urging families to seek timely evaluation rather than relying on self-diagnosis or medication without medical advice.
Doctors stress early diagnosis
Doctors have cautioned parents against treating children with fever and respiratory symptoms without consulting a qualified medical professional. They noted that symptoms initially resembling a routine viral infection can sometimes be associated with influenza or other illnesses that may lead to complications.
Prolonged fever, persistent coughing and worsening respiratory symptoms should not be ignored, particularly when children or other vulnerable patients are affected.
Dr Musa Khan, Superintendent of Fever Hospital, said changing weather patterns across Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana could make it difficult for some people to adjust, especially those with existing health conditions.
People with chronic illnesses may face a greater risk of complications and should be particularly attentive to changes in their health.
Who should take extra precautions?
Doctors have highlighted several groups that may be more vulnerable to severe respiratory infections:
Children: Parents should monitor persistent fever, poor fluid intake, unusual drowsiness and breathing difficulties.
Pregnant women and senior citizens: Medical advice should be sought promptly if symptoms develop or worsen.
People with chronic conditions: Individuals with asthma, diabetes, hypertension or other long-term illnesses should take additional care and follow their doctors’ guidance.
Symptoms that require attention
Common symptoms reported during viral illnesses include sudden fever, body aches, sore throat, persistent dry cough and fatigue.
Breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, confusion or a significant deterioration in general health warrant urgent medical evaluation. Caregivers should not wait for several days if serious warning signs appear.
Avoid self-medication and antibiotic misuse
Doctors have advised against taking antibiotics without a prescription. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections, and inappropriate use can contribute to antimicrobial resistance and other adverse effects.
Patients should consult qualified healthcare professionals for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Medical advice is especially important when symptoms persist beyond two to three days, worsen over time or affect people at higher risk of complications.
Hygiene and preventive measures
Health professionals recommend regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing a well-fitting mask in crowded or poorly ventilated places, particularly when experiencing respiratory symptoms.
People who are unwell should avoid close contact with vulnerable individuals where possible. Staying hydrated, resting and following medical advice can also support recovery.
Doctors have emphasised that timely assessment and appropriate care are important to identify infections that may require additional treatment and to reduce the risk of complications.
