Miyapur Land Auction: Revanth Reddy Faces Criticism Over 550-Acre Sale Plan

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's announcement to auction 550 acres of government land in Miyapur has triggered criticism from community representatives and concerns within the real estate industry over the potential impact on land and housing prices.

The announcement came on Friday after the Supreme Court delivered its verdict in favour of the state government in the dispute over the land. Revanth Reddy subsequently said the government would proceed with the auction.

However, representatives of Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Backward Classes (BC) have questioned the decision, arguing that the land should instead be used for community welfare and development programmes.

SC, ST and BC Groups Demand Land for Welfare Facilities

The demand has gained attention in view of the Chief Minister's earlier statements about the shortage of government land available for distribution to disadvantaged communities.

In August 2025, while laying the foundation stone for the Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud memorial at Tank Bund, Revanth Reddy had said the government did not have sufficient land for allotment to SC, ST and BC communities.

He reiterated concerns over land availability during the Sevalal Maharaj Jayanthi celebrations in February this year, particularly regarding land distribution to tribal communities.

Community representatives are now seeking the allotment of portions of the Miyapur land for public welfare purposes. Their proposals include community halls, hospitals and housing facilities for economically weaker sections.

They argue that government land in a prime location such as Miyapur could provide long-term benefits if used for social infrastructure rather than being sold.

Opposition Stand on Government Land Sales Questioned

The proposed auction has also brought attention to Revanth Reddy's earlier opposition to the sale of government land when he was the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president.

At the time, he had criticised the previous BRS government for selling public land, arguing that such properties should be preserved for future generations.

He had maintained that government land would be required for essential infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and crematoriums.

His earlier position has now become a point of criticism, with opponents questioning the decision to auction the Miyapur land after the Congress government previously opposed similar land-sale proposals.

Revanth Reddy Defends Proposed Auction

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the Chief Minister defended the government's decision, stating that the auction would help protect the land from encroachments.

He also said the revenue generated through the sale would be utilised for welfare and development programmes.

The proposed auction follows earlier government land sales involving properties associated with the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

Builders Warn of Higher Land and Housing Prices

The real estate sector has also raised concerns about the proposed sale.

A member of CREDAI Telangana said that while government land could be allotted for infrastructure and social development projects, an outright auction might have unintended consequences for the property market.

The member pointed to the earlier auction of TGIIC land in Raidurg, which reportedly fetched record prices and established a new benchmark for land values in the area.

According to the industry representative, a similar outcome in Miyapur could force developers to spend significantly more on land acquisition. These additional costs could eventually be passed on to homebuyers, potentially increasing housing prices.

The proposed auction has therefore sparked a wider debate over whether the Miyapur land should generate revenue for the state government or be retained for public infrastructure and community welfare.
