West Bengal Rain Alert: Heavy Showers Forecast After Cyclone Arnab Weakens

Kolkata: Rain and squally winds affected parts of West Bengal on Thursday, October 29, after the very severe cyclonic storm Arnab weakened into a depression over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south Odisha, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department said the depression was likely to weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area by Thursday evening. Its remnants are expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of West Bengal through Friday.

Heavy Rain Forecast in Several Districts

The IMD forecast heavy rainfall in South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia districts in south Bengal until Friday.

In the sub-Himalayan region, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts were expected to receive heavy rain until Saturday morning. Thunderstorms and rainfall were also likely in different parts of West Bengal through Saturday, the department said.

Kolkata was forecast to remain overcast on Thursday, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain possible.

Sagar Island Records Highest Rainfall

According to IMD data, Sagar Island along the Bay of Bengal coast recorded 81.8 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, the highest reported total in the state during that period.

Other locations that received significant rainfall included Medinipur, which recorded 48 mm, Digha with 46 mm, Haldia with 36 mm and Kanthi with 35 mm.

Fresh Weather System Over the Andaman Sea

The IMD also reported the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea on Thursday morning.

The system was expected to move west-northwestwards and could intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, according to the weather department.

Residents in the districts covered by the rainfall forecast should follow the latest IMD advisories for updated information on weather conditions and possible disruptions.

Editorial note: Verify the cyclone name, its classification, location and latest IMD bulletin before publication, as these are time-sensitive meteorological details.
