Chennai, June 21: At least seven workers lost their lives and more than 60 others were affected after an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district on Saturday.
The incident took place at a prawn processing unit near Periyapalayam, located on the outskirts of Chennai. According to officials, workers inside the facility began experiencing breathing difficulties shortly after the gas leak occurred. Several people reportedly collapsed and required immediate medical attention.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the affected workers were transported to nearby hospitals. Health authorities said a number of patients were admitted to intensive care units, while others received treatment for respiratory problems and related symptoms.
Rescue and relief operations were carried out with the support of emergency response teams. Authorities also arranged additional medical assistance to handle the large number of victims.
Following the incident, the Tamil Nadu government ordered a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the leak and assess whether safety protocols were followed at the facility. Officials have also initiated legal action, and police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed concern over the tragedy and directed officials to ensure proper medical care for those undergoing treatment. The state government said it is closely monitoring the condition of the injured workers.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about industrial safety standards and the handling of hazardous substances at processing units across the region. Further investigation is underway.
