Gandhi Medical College Opens 45-Bed Emergency Medicine Department in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Gandhi Medical College (GMC) inaugurated its Emergency Medicine Department (EMD) on Tuesday, October 27, becoming the first government medical college in Hyderabad to establish a dedicated department for emergency medicine.

The launch also makes Gandhi Medical College the third government medical college in Telangana to open an emergency medicine unit. The facility has 45 beds, making it the largest emergency medicine facility among government medical colleges in the state, according to the information provided.

Department Aims to Improve Emergency Care

The new department has been established in line with the National Medical Commission's (NMC) requirements for medical colleges to provide dedicated emergency medicine facilities.

The unit is intended to ensure that patients experiencing medical emergencies receive prompt assessment and treatment. Particular emphasis will be placed on the golden hour, the critical period following a serious injury or medical emergency when timely intervention can significantly influence patient outcomes.

The dedicated facility is expected to strengthen emergency care services and improve the hospital's capacity to manage patients requiring urgent medical attention.

Medical Equipment Worth ₹8 Lakh Donated

As part of a corporate social responsibility initiative, enGen Global donated two medical machines worth a combined ₹8 lakh to the department.

The donated equipment includes:

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) machine: Enables bedside ultrasound examinations to support rapid clinical assessment.

Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) machine: Helps medical teams assess oxygenation, carbon dioxide levels and acid-base balance in patients.

The equipment is expected to support faster diagnosis and treatment decisions in emergency settings.

Emergency Medicine Postgraduate Seats May Follow

According to a Times of India report, Director of Medical Education Dr N Vani said Gandhi Medical College could receive postgraduate seats in Emergency Medicine following a recent inspection by the National Medical Commission.

The allocation of seats would depend on the applicable regulatory process and official approval.

The new department marks an expansion of dedicated emergency medicine infrastructure at a government medical college in Hyderabad, with a focus on timely treatment, improved diagnostic support and specialised medical training.
