HMWSSB Charts Roadmap to Keep Sewage Out of Durgam Cheruvu

<p>The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is drawing up a roadmap to stop sewage from entering Durgam Cheruvu, with a particular focus on inflows through nalas during non-rainy periods.</p>
<p>HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy conducted a field inspection on Friday, covering nalas that drain into the lake, sewage flows, sewage treatment plants (STPs), stormwater drains and sewage diversion systems. He directed officials to determine the exact quantities of sewage, treated water and rainwater entering the lake through each route and prepare a comprehensive flow map.</p>
<p>According to a press release issued by the board, the long-term plan will factor in current sewage volumes as well as the projected increase in load up to 2047. Ashok Reddy also ordered a comprehensive survey of private STPs operating at hotels, commercial complexes, high-rise buildings and residential complexes within the lake's catchment area.</p>
<p>Officials were directed to expedite ongoing desilting work, pipeline connectivity projects and sewage diversion works. They were also asked to examine an alternative diversion system that would prevent sewage from flowing back towards residential colonies whenever an STP was not functioning or inlet routes were blocked.</p>
