Hyderabad: The Telangana government has imposed a one-year ban on the manufacturing, storage, distribution, transport and sale of analogue paneer across the state, citing public health concerns. The prohibition came into effect on Thursday, September 10, and will remain in force for one year.
Analogue paneer, also referred to as non-dairy or artificial paneer, is prepared by completely or partially replacing milk fat or milk solids with vegetable oil, vegetable fat or other non-dairy ingredients. Under the new order, no such product can be labelled, marketed, sold or represented to consumers as 'paneer'.
The Telangana Commissioner of Food Safety issued the order under Section 30(2)(a) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, stating that the measure was being taken in the interest of public health. The order has been formally notified as Gazette Notification number 807, issued on September 10.
The ban effectively covers the entire supply chain, from manufacture through to the point of sale, including transportation of such products.
TG SAFE has directed that the notification be widely disseminated through print and electronic media so that the public, traders and manufacturers are fully informed of the prohibition.
