Hyderabad: Indian Rock Python Rescued During Ganesh Immersion Procession

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA), in coordination with Madhuranagar police, rescued an Indian rock python and a broiler chicken during a Ganesh immersion procession in Hyderabad.

According to GHSPCA, animal volunteers and police intervened after receiving information about the alleged use of animals during a street performance. The team intercepted a visiting dance troupe from Visakhapatnam during the procession.

GHSPCA said the snake handler had allegedly evaded an earlier attempt to intercept him in Kondapur on September 19. The organisation alleged that the protected Indian rock python was being used in street performances and that the chicken had also been subjected to mistreatment.

Madhuranagar SHO Prabhakar and his team assisted GHSPCA volunteers during the intervention.

The rescued python was found to be suffering from an oral cavity and tooth infection and is currently undergoing treatment under veterinary doctor Dr Vishva Chaitanya.

GHSPCA said the python will be released into its natural habitat after it fully recovers and the necessary permission is obtained from wildlife authorities.

The organisation also appealed to citizens not to support performances that allegedly exploit wildlife and urged people to report cases of animal cruelty to the authorities.

According to GHSPCA, the Indian rock python is a protected wild animal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The organisation has urged the concerned authorities to take appropriate action under applicable wildlife-protection laws.
