Muscat: Iran and Oman have held the first meeting of their newly formed Joint Hormuz Committee to discuss the future management of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping routes.
The committee was created after senior officials from both countries agreed to continue discussions on the administration of the strategic waterway. The talks covered the management of shipping, maritime services and other operational matters linked to the Strait.
During the meeting, both sides stressed the need to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law. They also agreed to continue consultations with other coastal countries and relevant stakeholders on future arrangements for the waterway.
Iran and Oman said all future decisions related to the Strait should respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of both coastal nations. They also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining maritime safety, freedom of navigation and regional stability.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global trade route through which a large share of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass. Any developments related to the waterway are closely watched by international energy markets and the global shipping industry.
