Aizawl: Security forces in Mizoram seized drugs worth more than Rs 846 crore and arrested 930 people in drug-related cases between January and August this year, officials said on Wednesday.
The seizures included methamphetamine tablets and heroin, among other narcotic substances. A senior Home Department official said 111 of those arrested were foreigners, most of them Myanmar nationals.
A total of 635 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, during the first eight months of the year.
The official said 45 people, including seven women, died in Mizoram due to drug consumption during the period. In 2025, 118 people, including 18 women, died due to drug consumption in the state.
Authorities have intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking and consumption, particularly along Mizoram's international border with Myanmar.
Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga, speaking at a drug-awareness campaign in Aizawl, said the state had renewed its commitment to tackling drug abuse. He called for coordinated efforts involving enforcement agencies, NGOs, churches, community leaders and the public.
Sapdanga said enforcement efforts should extend beyond drug peddlers and carriers, with authorities also investigating others involved in the illicit trade. He also called for stronger border operations to prevent the inflow of narcotics.
At the same time, the minister stressed the need for a compassionate approach towards people struggling with addiction, including rehabilitation and support to help them return to normal life. He also called for stronger drug-awareness programmes in educational institutions.
The minister highlighted the efforts of residents of Tlangmawi village to make their community drug-free and urged young people, parents and community organisations to work together against drug abuse.
Mizoram and neighbouring Manipur are considered important drug-trafficking corridors in the Northeast because of their proximity to Myanmar and the Golden Triangle, a major illicit narcotics-producing region.
Six districts of Mizoram and five districts of Manipur share about 910 km of unfenced international border with Myanmar, making border enforcement a key part of efforts to restrict drug trafficking.
