YSRCP Leader Nagarjuna Yadav Secures Bail in Hyderabad Remarks Case
Hyderabad, July 17: A Nampally court on Friday granted bail to YSR Congress Party spokesperson Nagarjuna Yadav, who was arrested in connection with allegedly derogatory comments made about Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy during a televised political discussion.
The case relates to a debate that reportedly took place nearly two years ago. According to the police complaint, Yadav allegedly compared the chief minister to a food-delivery worker and made further comments questioning his suitability for the state’s highest elected office. The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings.
Yadav was taken into custody by Telangana Police from his residence in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. He was subsequently brought to Hyderabad and produced before the court. The Nampally court later allowed his bail application, though detailed information about the conditions attached to his release was not immediately available.
Complaint Filed Over Circulating Debate Video
The criminal case began after Kailash Sajjan, identified as a Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee social-media office-bearer, approached Begum Bazar Police on July 10.
The complainant said he had come across a Facebook video containing an earlier television debate involving Yadav. According to the complaint, the remarks were insulting to the chief minister and undermined the dignity of a constitutionally elected office.
Begum Bazar Police registered a case under Sections 192, 352, 353(1) and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The complaint also sought action against others allegedly connected to the television programme and the social-media page that circulated the video.
Police maintain that Yadav repeatedly used objectionable language while referring to Revanth Reddy. However, the YSRCP has disputed the basis and timing of the case, arguing that the comments formed part of a political debate and were made long before the complaint was filed.
YSRCP Alleges Political Motivation
Following the arrest, senior YSRCP representatives held a press conference at the party’s central office in Tadepalli and accused the Telangana authorities of acting under political pressure.
Former MLA TJR Sudhakar Babu, spokesperson Vangaveeti Narendra and student-wing leader Ravichandra questioned why police action was initiated almost two years after the televised exchange.
Party leaders also alleged that authorities did not adequately verify the authenticity and context of the circulating video before proceeding against Yadav. They maintained that criticism expressed in a political debate should not automatically result in criminal prosecution.
The YSRCP further alleged political coordination between the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The party claimed that the arrest was intended to intimidate an opposition spokesperson who had been publicly criticising the Andhra Pradesh government.
These allegations were made by YSRCP leaders and have not been independently established. Neither the Telangana government nor the Andhra Pradesh government was reported to have issued a detailed response to those specific accusations at the time of publication.
Questions Raised Over Arrest Procedure
YSRCP leaders claimed that Yadav was taken into custody late at night without adequate advance notice to his family. Reports, however, indicate that Telangana Police coordinated with local authorities while taking him into custody in Guntur.
The party also questioned the application of criminal-law provisions to statements made during a political television programme, describing the arrest as excessive and undemocratic.
The controversy has renewed debate about the boundary between political criticism, personal insult and criminal liability. While public representatives and political commentators are entitled to express disagreement, courts may examine whether particular statements cross legal limits relating to provocation, public order or reputational harm.
With bail now granted, Yadav will remain subject to the ongoing legal process. Further clarity is expected when the court’s detailed order and the prosecution’s next course of action become available.
