New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a 20-hour introductory module on computational thinking (CT) and artificial intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12, aiming to build AI literacy and encourage the responsible use of emerging technologies.
The activity-based learning module was developed by NCERT in consultation with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and IIT Jodhpur. It is designed for students without prior knowledge of artificial intelligence.
The course introduces students to how machines learn from examples, how AI is used in everyday applications and how to identify potential limitations in AI-generated information. It also covers deepfakes, misinformation and the importance of verifying information before relying on it.
Focus on practical learning
According to NCERT, the module aims to help students understand how AI systems work, evaluate their capabilities and limitations, and become careful and confident users of technology.
It introduces computational thinking as a systematic approach to solving problems. Through discussions, practical exercises, experimentation and reflection, students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills.
The activities are designed to be conducted with or without digital devices, allowing schools with different levels of technological access to participate.
Data privacy and ethical AI use
A key component of the module is the safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence. Students will explore issues such as personal data protection, fairness, digital safety and the risks associated with misinformation.
The lessons also emphasise the need to critically assess AI-generated responses rather than accepting them without verification.
NCERT said the programme seeks to develop informed and responsible technology users while reinforcing the importance of human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility in learning.
The introduction of the module is intended to help secondary and senior secondary students better understand AI's growing role in education and everyday life while recognising the need for careful and responsible use.
