Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, October 25, inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) ₹169-crore data centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Odisha, marking a significant addition to the country’s digital financial infrastructure.
The inauguration was attended by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Odisha Governor Brajmohan Ram, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram and Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, among other officials.
RBI Data Centre at Jatni
The facility is spread across 18.55 acres at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar. Its foundation stone was laid by then RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22, 2023.
According to the government, the data centre will host mission-critical payment and settlement systems alongside other major RBI initiatives. It has been designed to provide secure, resilient, scalable and future-ready computing infrastructure to support the central bank’s requirements and the wider financial sector.
The facility is expected to contribute to the reach, efficiency and reliability of digital financial services as India’s financial system becomes increasingly technology-driven.
Cybersecurity Training Institute to Build Expertise
The accompanying Cybersecurity Training Institute is intended to strengthen specialised training, research and capability development in cybersecurity and enterprise technology.
The institute will provide a dedicated platform for developing skills and improving preparedness against cyber threats affecting the financial sector.
Officials said the location was selected partly because of its geographical stability, including its distance from seismically active zones and high-risk international border areas. These factors are intended to reduce exposure to certain natural and geopolitical risks.
Odisha’s Digital Infrastructure Development
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the inauguration, saying the facility would contribute to the state’s development.
Majhi also described the event as Modi’s ninth visit to Odisha since the BJP government came to power in the state in 2024.
According to the chief minister, the Jatni facility will be the RBI’s second data centre of this kind after its existing facility in Navi Mumbai.
Strengthening India’s Financial Technology Systems
The new facility is intended to support the RBI’s growing computing needs while providing infrastructure for critical financial operations. Secure data storage, reliable processing capacity and stronger cybersecurity capabilities are increasingly important as digital payments and technology-based financial services expand.
The data centre and training institute are expected to contribute to the resilience of India’s financial infrastructure by combining computing capacity with specialised cybersecurity training.
Their long-term impact will depend on operational deployment, infrastructure performance and the development of cybersecurity expertise across the financial sector.
