Hyderabad: Many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from Hyderabad are facing uncertainty over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Telangana. The confusion mainly relates to passport details and the procedure for maintaining voter registration while living abroad.
Election officials have clarified that Indian citizens residing overseas can continue to be registered as overseas voters if they have not obtained foreign citizenship. Eligible applicants must register through Form 6A using the address mentioned in their valid Indian passport.
Officials also said that overseas voters are expected to complete the required registration process themselves through the Election Commission's official online portal. Family members in India cannot complete or sign the required forms on behalf of NRIs.
The clarification comes after several overseas Indians expressed concern over reports suggesting they might lose their voter registration if the verification process was not completed correctly.
The Election Commission has advised NRIs to check their voter details, update their information wherever required and complete the online verification process within the prescribed timeline.
Authorities have assured eligible overseas voters that there is no need to travel to India solely for this purpose, as the required formalities can be completed through the official Election Commission platform.
Officials have urged NRIs to rely only on verified information issued by the Election Commission and avoid confusion caused by unofficial messages circulating on social media.
