Damascus: At least seven people were killed and four others injured after attackers opened fire on a passenger bus in northwestern Syria late Wednesday, according to state media.
The attack took place near the Masyaf Bridge in Homs province, the state-run SANA news agency reported. The victims were employees of a company who were travelling home after work.
First responders took the injured and other victims to hospitals in the Homs area as security forces launched an investigation at the scene.
Authorities said the motive for the attack was not immediately known and no group had claimed responsibility. Syrian authorities have not identified any suspects in connection with the shooting.
Homs Internal Security Forces Commander Brigadier General Bassem Mohammad Shaaban described the incident as an attempt to undermine security in the governorate. His remarks were reported by SANA.
The attack comes as Syrian authorities continue to face security challenges following more than 13 years of conflict and the fall of the Assad government in late 2024.
Authorities have reported disrupting planned attacks and activities by armed cells, although deadly shootings and explosions have continued to occur in Damascus and other parts of the country.
