Hyderabad: Government school teachers in Telangana have announced plans to hold an indefinite hunger strike at Dharna Chowk on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, demanding amendments to GO MS No. 25.
The government order lays down norms for the rationalisation of teachers in government and local body schools based on student strength across Telangana.
The announcement was made during a state-level meeting of the Telangana Secondary Grade Teachers Union (SGTU) in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Teachers demand changes to GO 25
SGTU president K Mahipal Reddy demanded that the government amend GO MS No. 25 and ensure that at least two Secondary Grade Teachers (SGTs) are appointed in every primary school.
He also said teachers should be assigned to teaching and monitoring duties at the field level instead of being sent on foreign tours.
Mahipal Reddy further demanded that one teacher be appointed for each subject in schools that have achieved foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) competency.
He also sought a reduction in the pay difference between SGTs and School Assistants under the proposed Pay Revision Commission (PRC). He demanded an increase in the Headmaster allowance for SGTs serving as headmasters in primary schools.
Other demands
SGTU general secretary A Venkatesham demanded voting rights in Teacher MLC elections for teachers working in primary and upper-primary schools.
He also sought implementation of the Old Pension Scheme for employees recruited through the 2003 DSC.
Venkatesham urged the government to issue government orders on pending dearness allowance (DA) payments and obtain the PRC report at the earliest.
He called for the immediate implementation of the PRC recommendations and clearance of all pending bills.
The teachers' union said the proposed protest would continue until the government considers their demands and addresses their concerns regarding teacher rationalisation, service conditions and pending payments.
