Three High Court Chief Justices Appointed as Supreme Court Judges

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has appointed three High Court Chief Justices — Justice Sunita Agarwal, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh — as judges of the Supreme Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments on Monday, October 5, saying they were made under the constitutional powers vested in the President. The appointments are effective from the dates on which the judges assume charge.

Justice Sunita Agarwal is the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, while Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya is the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Both judges have the Allahabad High Court as their parent High Court.

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh is the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court and has the Jharkhand High Court as his parent High Court.

Supreme Court Strength

The appointments come after Parliament increased the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. The Department of Justice lists the Supreme Court’s sanctioned strength at 38 in its latest available data.

The three appointments will increase the court’s working strength once the judges take oath.

The latest appointments follow the appointment of five new Supreme Court judges in June 2026, including Chief Justices of the Punjab and Haryana, Bombay, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Courts, along with a senior advocate.

The new appointments will further fill vacancies in the apex court and take its strength closer to the sanctioned limit.
