Washington, D.C.: A group of Democratic lawmakers has called on the Trump administration to review recent changes to the green card processing system, saying the policy could make it more difficult for eligible immigrants to obtain permanent residency in the United States.
The lawmakers raised concerns over a new directive that gives priority to consular processing outside the US instead of allowing many eligible applicants already living in the country to complete their green card process through adjustment of status.
In a letter addressed to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Joseph Edlow, the lawmakers said the revised policy moves away from long-standing immigration practices and could lead to unnecessary delays for thousands of applicants.
According to the lawmakers, the new guidance replaces previous standards with broader discretionary criteria, including references to "national interest" and "economic benefit." They argued that these terms have not been clearly defined, creating uncertainty for applicants and immigration officials.
The lawmakers also expressed concern that the policy could affect families, skilled workers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and businesses that depend on foreign talent. They warned that processing applications outside the country could separate families for longer periods and disrupt employment opportunities.
The letter further stated that adjustment of status has traditionally been an important pathway for immigrants already residing legally in the United States. They urged the administration to restore the earlier approach and ensure immigration decisions remain fair, transparent, and consistent with existing laws.
The Trump administration has introduced several immigration policy changes during its second term, saying the reforms are intended to strengthen oversight of the legal immigration system. However, Democratic leaders argue that the latest changes could create additional hurdles for lawful applicants.
No response has yet been issued by USCIS regarding the lawmakers' request.
