Caracas: The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela has climbed to 235, according to the latest official figures. Emergency teams are continuing search and rescue operations as many people are still believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings.
The twin earthquakes caused widespread destruction in several parts of the country, damaging homes, hospitals, schools and public infrastructure. Thousands of residents have been displaced, while many families remain without electricity, clean water and other basic services.
Authorities said more than 4,300 people have been injured, and several others are still missing. Rescue workers, supported by military personnel and volunteers, are using heavy equipment and search dogs to locate survivors.
The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency in the worst-affected regions and is coordinating relief efforts. International humanitarian organisations and rescue teams have also begun providing assistance to support recovery operations.
Officials have warned that the number of casualties may increase as rescue work continues. Authorities have urged people to remain alert because aftershocks are still being reported in some areas.
