Hyderabad: The family of a 58-year-old farmer from Tanuku in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district donated his organs after he was declared brain dead at a private hospital in Hyderabad.
The deceased, Maddipati Hanumantha Rao, had been suffering from a serious neurological condition. He underwent bifrontal decompressive craniectomy on September 14 and was subsequently shifted by his family to a private hospital in Hyderabad for emergency treatment.
Despite medical intervention, his condition did not improve. A team of doctors declared him brain dead on Thursday, September 17.
Following the declaration, Hanumantha Rao’s wife, Maddipati Suvarchala, and son, Lalitha Shankar, consented to organ donation through Telangana’s state-run Jeevandan organ donation initiative.
His two kidneys, liver and two corneas were donated for transplantation. According to Jeevandan Telangana, the organ donation will help three patients in need.
Jeevandan officials expressed gratitude to Hanumantha Rao’s family for making the decision to donate his organs at a difficult time.
With this donation, Telangana’s Jeevandan programme has recorded 148 brain-dead organ donations so far this year.
