India: Bank Unions Begin Three-Day Nationwide Strike From September 28

New Delhi: Banking services across India are likely to be affected for three days from Monday, September 28, as bank unions begin a nationwide strike over demands including the implementation of a five-day working week.

The strike is expected to impact physical banking operations, including cheque clearance, cash deposits and withdrawals and other branch-level services.

The disruption is likely to be felt primarily at public sector banks, old-generation private sector banks and regional rural banks.

Digital banking services likely to continue

Despite the strike, customers are expected to have access to several digital banking services.

Online banking, mobile banking, UPI transactions and other digital payment services are generally expected to remain operational, subject to individual banks' systems and technical availability.

Customers who require branch-based services have been advised to complete essential banking work ahead of the strike.

Bank unions press for five-day work week

The unions are demanding a five-day working week for bank employees, along with other pending service-related issues.

The proposed strike is expected to affect branch operations during the three-day period, although the extent of disruption could vary between banks and regions.

Customers may therefore experience delays in services that require physical processing, particularly cheque-related transactions and other branch-level banking work.
