IPS Officer Bushra Bano Transferred After Complaint Over Viral Career Video

West Bengal IPS officer Bushra Bano has been transferred from her post as Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) in Kharagpur, days after a right-wing organisation filed a formal complaint with the West Bengal Home Secretary over a video she shared about her career journey.

The state government issued the transfer order on Monday, September 14. Bano has been moved as Deputy Commandant of the State Armed Police (SAP) 4th Battalion. She is replaced in Kharagpur by Partha Ghosh, who previously served as Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate.

The controversy began after Bano posted a video tracing her path into the Indian Police Service. In the video, she opened with "Assalamualaikum" and "Inshallah" and signed off with "Jazakallah." The Hindu Legal Fund filed a complaint with the government alleging that the officer did not say Vande Mataram or Jai Hind.

"A serving officer representing the Indian state should maintain neutrality and use national expressions in public communication," the group wrote in a post on X, demanding an inquiry against her.

Bano's video, however, was primarily an account of her inspiring career journey, from working as an assistant professor in Saudi Arabia to clearing one of India's most competitive examinations. She credited AMU's Residential Coaching Academy (RCA) for providing her with study materials, test series and access to their library during her preparation.

Bano is a 2021-batch IPS officer from the West Bengal cadre. Her first posting was as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Hooghly Rural. In June this year, she was promoted to Additional Superintendent of Police and posted in Kharagpur before the latest transfer order was issued.
