Doha/Washington: Iran and Qatar are expected to hold discussions on Wednesday over the implementation of a memorandum of understanding linked to Tehran’s agreement with the United States and the release of frozen Iranian funds.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the talks would likely take place in Doha and would focus on certain provisions of the MoU, including arrangements connected to restricted Iranian assets.
The discussions come after US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held meetings with Qatari mediators in Doha. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said the meetings focused on US-Iran diplomatic efforts and wider regional developments.
However, both Iran and Qatar have indicated that no direct meeting between Iranian and US officials is scheduled at this stage. Iran has also said its negotiating team does not plan to meet US officials in the coming days.
A key issue in the talks is around USD 6 billion in Iranian funds that remain frozen in Qatar. Qatari officials said the release of the money would depend on the progress of ongoing negotiations.
The MoU, signed remotely on June 18 between Iran and the United States, reportedly includes timelines related to maritime access in the Strait of Hormuz and restrictions on Iranian shipping.
The diplomatic activity comes amid continued regional tensions and wider discussions on stability, maritime security and developments in Lebanon
