Ranchi: A woman from Jharkhand's capital Ranchi was allegedly held captive, abused and forced to perform household work in Dubai after travelling there for a nursing job, police said on Friday.
The woman, identified as Monica Kachhap, allegedly travelled to Dubai on May 5 after responding to a social media advertisement for a nursing position. According to a complaint filed by her father, she had paid Rs 15,000 to Priyanka, an agent associated with a private company identified as AMD Trend Solutions, after being promised employment.
The family also alleged that Priyanka later demanded money for an air ticket, which was paid by Monica.
According to the complaint, Monica travelled from Delhi to Sharjah on May 5, where a driver allegedly sent by the company picked her up. Police said the complaint alleges that the driver confiscated her passport.
The following day, she was allegedly taken to an office on the 24th floor of a building in Ajman. Police said two people, identified as Ritesh and Md Meraj Ansari, allegedly pressured her to sign documents written in Arabic.
According to Airport police station officer-in-charge Pankaj Sharma, Monica was later allegedly told that the documents showed she had taken a loan of 12,600 dirhams and that she would be allowed to return to India only after repaying the amount.
Family seeks her return
Monica's father alleged that she had been working as a nurse at a private hospital in Ranchi before travelling to Dubai. He said she holds a BSc in Nursing and decided to travel abroad after coming into contact with Priyanka through social media.
According to the family, Monica is currently staying near the Abu Baker Al Siddique Metro Station in Dubai. Her mother alleged that her visa has expired and that her passport remains with the agents who allegedly arranged the job.
The family has appealed to authorities to intervene and bring Monica back to India.
Based on the father's complaint filed on Tuesday, Ranchi Airport Police registered an FIR against Priyanka, her husband Ritesh and Md Meraj Ansari. The allegations are under investigation, and the accused have not been convicted of any offence.
