The remains of a 25-year-old woman were discovered inside a residence at Basisthapur Bylane in Guwahati's Hatigaon area, in what police are treating as a particularly serious fatal crime case.
The deceased has been identified as Riya Talukdar, a resident of Noonmati. Her husband, Ramanujan Goswami, whose family home is in Gauripur, is suspected of being involved in the incident. Police have launched an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and determine a motive.
According to preliminary information, Riya and Ramanujan had a heated argument on Monday. Ramanujan reportedly left the house at around 8 pm that night. The fatal incident is suspected to have taken place between 24 and 48 hours before the remains were discovered.
On Tuesday, neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the residence and alerted police. A team reached the spot and began investigating. Police said the circumstances of the case were particularly gruesome, with preliminary information indicating the woman had suffered severe injuries including the severing of her head, which was reportedly placed inside a black polythene bag and kept in a refrigerator. Her fingers were also reportedly cut off.
These allegations are yet to be fully established as the investigation continues.
The remains were taken to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to help investigators establish the cause and circumstances of passing. Whether Ramanujan Goswami has been traced or detained is yet to be confirmed. Police are continuing their probe.
