Chennai: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has officially begun work on a new on-campus student accommodation project aimed at expanding residential facilities for its growing academic community. The initiative started with a groundbreaking ceremony held at the institute's campus.
The project is being developed in partnership with Elevate Campuses Limited (ECL) under a public-private partnership model. The proposed residential complex will feature two hostel blocks capable of accommodating more than 1,800 PhD students and project staff.
According to IIT Madras, the new hostels will include fully furnished, air-conditioned rooms along with modern amenities such as dedicated study spaces, recreation areas, pantry facilities, sports infrastructure and common areas designed to encourage collaboration and community living.
The institute expects construction to be completed by mid-2028, with the project forming part of its long-term plan to strengthen campus infrastructure and improve the overall student experience.
Speaking on the occasion, IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti said the institute believes the public-private partnership model can help create world-class student facilities while supporting sustainability and student well-being. Elevate Campuses CEO Narasimha Jayakumar said the collaboration aims to deliver safe, technology-enabled and comfortable accommodation for students.
